Prof. Hashem Kilani

Brief Biography:

Professor Hashem A. Kilani is currently the founder and President-Elect of the Arab Society for Biomechanics in Sports (ArabSBS), a pioneering organization dedicated to advancing biomechanics and sports sciences across the Arab world. A distinguished scholar in biomechanics, kinesiology, and human performance, he brings more than four decades of academic, research, and leadership experience spanning the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the United States.

He earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology (Biomechanics) from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (1988), following an M.S. from Purdue University (1984) and a B.S. in Physical Education from Helwan University, Egypt (1974).

Professor Kilani has held prominent academic positions at the University of Jordan, United Arab Emirates University, and Sultan Qaboos University, alongside visiting appointments at Birzeit University, Al-Ahliyya Amman University, and Nanjing University in China. At the University of Jordan, he served as Vice Dean for Quality Assurance, Chair of the Health & Recreation Department, and Chair of several university-level academic and accreditation committees. He was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher (Ranked 7th, University of Jordan, 2017) and received the Distinguished Researcher Award in 2020.

His scholarly contributions encompass biomechanics, human movement, physical activity and health, lifestyle epidemiology, motor performance, sports training, and educational quality assurance. He has supervised over 40 master’s theses and more than 16 Ph.D. dissertations, while evaluating numerous doctoral works internationally. His extensive publications include books, refereed journal articles, invited conference papers, and international proceedings. His most recent book, Exercise for Girls, was published in 2025 by Austin Macauley in London.

Beyond academia, Professor Kilani has played significant roles in applied sport and national development, serving as technical manager for the Jordan Athletics Federation, advisor for national physical activity initiatives, and consultant in obesity prevention, autism programs, and youth physical fitness standards across the Arab region.

His research excellence has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Drassa Award for Best Sports Science Research (2015) and Best Lecturer in the Arab World (2017).

Professor Kilani continues to advance international research, curriculum development, and scientific leadership, with a strong commitment to biomechanics, sports performance, and public health through evidence-based practice and high-quality education.
